Eye Health
It is really important to keep your eyes healthy. Find out ways here!
Did you know that it is possible to make your eyes healthier? All it takes is a few small changes in your day-to-day life. To help you keep your eyes in peak condition follow this ten step guide to healthy eyes:#
1. Eat right for good sight
A delicious way to improve the health of your eyes is to eat a balanced diet. That means plenty of eye-friendly fruit and veg with all the right nutrients. At meal times try some tasty spinach, red peppers, kale, leeks, avocado, peaches and blueberries. Cold water fish is also good, so remember to eat sardines, mackerel or tuna at least once a week.
2. Exercise regularly
You don’t have to give your eyes a hard physical work out at the gym! But 30 minutes of exercise each day works wonders. That’s because eyes need oxygen to stay healthy and comfortable. So take a brisk walk, go for a bike ride or dive into your local pool, and your blood will carry plenty of fresh oxygen to your eyes.
3. Get a good night’s sleep
Eyes hate lack of sleep. Get your head down at a sensible time each evening, and your eyes will feel bright and refreshed in the morning.
4. Avoid smoke
Try to keep away from people who smoke now, and steer clear of cigarettes when you’re older. If you smoke, you are much more likely to develop eye diseases than someone who doesn’t smoke.
5. Use goggles to protect your eyes
When you’re being active you might wear pads on your elbows, shins and knees, along with a helmet. But what about your eyes? If you play a sport like squash, or go skiing, get yourself a pair of goggles to make sure your eyes don’t get hurt.
6. Avoid alcohol
When you’re older, you’ll be able to enjoy alcoholic drinks. So when you get to that age, try to remember that too much alcohol isn’t a good idea, as it weakens your body’s ability to protect against eye disease.
7. Protect your eyes against the damaging effects of UV light
The rays from the sun contain ultraviolet (UV) light. It’s UV light that can give you sunburn. Too much of it will also harm your eyes. You’re never too young to protect your eyes against UV light with a pair of good quality sunglasses. If you go skiing, goggles must always be worn because UV light is especially strong on the ski slopes.
8. Watch your weight
If you follow Steps 1 and 2, you shouldn’t become overweight. People who are too heavy are more likely to develop problems with their eyes as they get older.
9. Drink plenty of water
The human body is made up of 70 per cent water. Eyes love it, so drink plenty of glasses of water each day to avoid dry, sore and irritated eyes.
10. Have regular eye examinations
An eye examination is a very important health check. It can reveal problems not only with your vision, but also other aspects of your health. Your eyes should be examined once every two years, or more often if a doctor recommends it.
